Associated Press

A major safety switch was missing from an escalator when it
malfunctioned at Coors Field this summer, injuring dozens of baseball
fans, city inspectors said Tuesday. City inspectors said the switch
would have prevented the escalator from hurtling out of control July 2.

FIFA WINS INSURANCE LAWSUIT AGAINST AXA
Associated Press

World soccer's governing body FIFA said Monday it had won a lawsuit
against insurer AXA over the French company's decision two years ago to
halt World Cup coverage because of fears of terrorist attacks. FIFA
said a district court in Cologne, Germany, ruled that AXA acted
negligently and unlawfully when it withdrew cancelation coverage for
the 2002 tournament in Japan and South Korea. "FIFA is happy with this
judgment," Sepp Blatter, the soccer body's president, said in a
statement. FIFA declined to say how much it would seek in damages.

Kelli White's agent wants the sprint champion's drug case settled
quickly, saying it is hurting her financially and damaging her
reputation. White and six other American athletes tested positive for
banned substances, the U.S. Olympic Committee said Tuesday following a
review by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. White faces the loss of two
world championship gold medals because of use of the stimulant
modafinil.

ACCUSATION MUDDLES K-STATE QB'S STATUS
Associated Press

Ell Roberson brought Kansas State unprecedented football success. Now
it's uncertain whether the senior quarterback will be allowed to play
in what would be his final collegiate game Friday night against Ohio
State in the Fiesta Bowl. Roberson was accused Thursday of sexually
assaulting a 22-year-old woman at the team hotel, and now Kansas State
coach Bill Snyder will decide whether Roberson will play for the No. 8
Wildcats against the seventh-ranked Buckeyes.

EVIDENCE OF PROSECTUION BIAS IN THE KOBE BRYANT AND MICHAEL JACKSON
CASES
By Julie Hilden

Attorney and author Julie Hilden considers evidence of prosecutorial
bias in two high-profile criminal cases. In the Kobe Bryant case,
Hilden discusses evidence that staffers ordered, and a D.A. received
and kept, T-shirts mocking Bryant's defense depicting a hanged man. In
the Jackson case, Hilden chronicles a number of what she argues are
highly inappropriate comments by the D.A.. Hilden argues that, in each
case, the jury ought to hear the evidence suggesting prosecutorial
bias, since that evidence may undermine jurors' confidence as to
whether exculpatory evidence has been properly given to the defense.

BRYANT CASE VOTED AP SPORTS STORY OF THE YEAR
Associated Press

The young hotel worker's accusation was shocking enough: Thrilled by a
chance encounter with a celebrity, she went to his room only to be
forced over a chair and sexually assaulted. More startling was the name
of the accused: Kobe Bryant. Even with a trial months away, it became
the most-watched case against a celebrity sports figure since O.J.
Simpson was charged with murder. It was chosen the story of the year by
the newspaper and broadcast members of The Associated Press.
